SWIFT + land sinking
Plain English: Hampton Roads has two water-level problems. The ocean is rising, and the land is sinking.
SWIFT
HRSD uses SWIFT to treat wastewater further and recharge the Potomac Aquifer.
Pressure
HRSD describes proposed Potomac Aquifer recharge pressure as 10–40 psi.
Why it matters
HRSD says groundwater withdrawals cause more than half of eastern Virginia land subsidence, and land subsidence contributes more than half of Hampton Roads’ net sea-level-rise effect.
Policy link
If public infrastructure is trying to put water back underground, new water-heavy industrial uses need strict controls.
